11 ways How to Pick a Watermelon in Korea

Here's how to pick a delicious watermelon without fail.

1, Look at the belly button on the opposite side of the watermelon to distinguish between males and females.
-Female watermelons have more sugar, fewer seeds, and a thinner skin, making them more flavorful.
On the other hand, the male watermelons have thicker skin, more water, and less sugar than female.

2, Check for scratches on the outside of the watermelon
-Many people mistake scratches for defects, but they are actually marks that indicate the number of times bees have pollinated (naturally fertilized) the watermelon.
The more brown scratches, the sweeter and more delicious the watermelon.

3, Check for white powder on the outside of the watermelon
-This is often mistaken for pesticides or dust, but it's actually molasses that has settled to the surface due to the high sugar content.
It will come back up even if you wipe it off.

4, Check if the faucet is hanging down or curled up in a kink
-The thinner the rind, the better, and a lack of fuzz is a sign of ripeness.
Slowly ripening watermelons tend to have a curled rind, while early ripening watermelons have a straight rind.
The more indented the rind, the higher the sugar content.
Additionally, watermelon rinds that are too shriveled may have been harvested too long ago and have lost their freshness.
Also, if the top of the watermelon is cut off, the water will evaporate quickly, so try to eat it as soon as possible.

5, The color of the watermelon rind should be deep and clear, and the black stripes should be wide and not sticky.
-If you look closely at the black stripes, you can see lines sticking out like human tendons, and the more prominent they are, the more ripe and sugary the fruit is.
It's also good to see if the stripes are well-defined towards the belly button.

6, Avoid watermelons with yellowed rinds.
-This is a sign that the watermelon hasn't gotten enough sun, which means it won't be fully ripe and will lose its sweetness.

7, A watermelon that makes a plump sound when you tap it is juicy, but it's not always easy to tell.

8, Choose a round, pretty watermelon.
-If they're skinny or ugly, there's a good chance they've been fertilized incorrectly, which means they'll have less sugar.

9, Larger watermelons are usually tastier than smaller ones, and if they're the same size, the heavier ones are usually sweeter and more juicy.

10, watermelons grown in hot and dry environments with large weather differences are delicious.
-For this reason, watermelons harvested before the rainy season are often the most delicious.
It's also a good idea to remember where it comes from and who produces it, because if you try a watermelon and it tastes too good, it's likely to come from an area with these conditions.

11, Avoid watermelons that are sold halved and wrapped in plastic wrap, as they are likely to have a high bacterial count after just one day.
-Don't do this at home either, and remember that bacteria can also get into the watermelon when you cut it, so it's best to wipe it clean first and store what's left in an airtight container.

This will only hinder your digestion.
